The Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) runs from West Vancouver past Horseshoe Bay and along Howe Sound to Squamish and Whistler. It squeezes between the ocean and the Coast Mountains, with waterfalls and granite walls along the way.
Past Whistler, the road continues as the Duffey Lake Road toward Lillooet — a much quieter, twistier ride that many riders consider the real prize.
Highlights
- The views over Howe Sound from Porteau Cove and the Lions Bay curves
- Shannon Falls and the Stawamus Chief at Squamish
- The Sea to Sky Gondola above Squamish
- Brandywine Falls and Whistler Village
- Optional: the Duffey Lake Road to Lillooet
Best time to ride
May to October. Winter brings snow, black ice and chain-up requirements above Squamish.
The road
A modern multi-lane highway with sweeping curves, enforced speed limits and heavy weekend traffic to Whistler.
Riding tips
- Ride on a weekday morning to avoid weekend traffic.
- If continuing on the Duffey Lake Road, fill up in Pemberton.
- Make it a loop back via the Fraser Canyon and Highway 1.
