Icefields Parkway

The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 North) connects Lake Louise and Jasper through Banff and Jasper National Parks, running along the spine of the Canadian Rockies. Glaciers hang above the road, rivers run milky blue-green and almost every turnout is a famous viewpoint.

It is more of a scenic ride than a technical one — long sweeping curves, two big climbs and unforgettable views — and wildlife sightings are almost guaranteed.

Best time to ride

June to September is best. Snow is possible in any month at the passes, and winter riding is not realistic.

The road

Smooth two-lane highway with wide shoulders in many places. There is almost no cell coverage, and fuel is available only at Saskatchewan River Crossing (seasonal) between Lake Louise and Jasper.

Riding tips

• A Parks Canada pass is required to ride the parkway.
• Fill your tank in Lake Louise or Jasper.
• Never stop on the road for wildlife — use pull-outs and keep your distance from bears and elk.
