Florida Keys Overseas Highway
The Overseas Highway (US-1) island-hops from the mainland at Florida City to Key West, crossing dozens of bridges with turquoise water on both sides. It is the southernmost road trip in the continental United States and ends at the famous Mile Marker 0.
There are no mountain passes here — the joy is the light, the water and the feeling of riding over the sea. It is an easy, relaxed ride and a great introduction to touring.
Highlights
- The Seven Mile Bridge, with the old bridge running alongside
- Bahia Honda State Park and its beaches
- Islamorada, the sportfishing capital
- Key West: Mile Marker 0, the Southernmost Point buoy and sunset at Mallory Square
- Wildlife on Big Pine Key, home of the tiny Key deer
Best time to ride
December to April is the most comfortable. Summer is hot and humid with daily storms, and hurricane season runs June through November.
The road
Flat and well-paved, mostly two lanes with some divided sections. Speed limits change often and are strictly enforced; crosswinds on the long bridges can be strong.
Riding tips
- Traffic builds on weekends and holidays — leave early.
- Use the mile markers to find stops and addresses.
- Hydrate and protect your skin; the sun reflects off the water.
