Great Ocean Road
The Great Ocean Road runs along the southwest coast of Victoria, Australia, from Torquay toward Allansford near Warrnambool. Built by returned soldiers after the First World War, it is both a scenic road and the world's largest war memorial.
The eastern half twists along the cliffs above surf beaches; the middle section dives into the rainforest of the Otways; the western end opens onto the limestone stacks of the Twelve Apostles and the wild Shipwreck Coast.
Highlights
- Bells Beach and the surf coast near Torquay
- The Memorial Arch at Eastern View
- The curves along the cliffs between Lorne and Apollo Bay
- The Great Otway National Park rainforest
- The Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge
Best time to ride
Rideable all year. Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) are ideal; summer is busy, and winter brings rain and cold southerly winds.
The road
Paved and well maintained, with many tight corners on the cliff sections. Traffic includes tour buses and visitors used to driving on the right — expect sudden stops at viewpoints.
Riding tips
- Australia drives on the left — take extra care after viewpoints and in roundabouts.
- Ride east to west so the ocean is on your side of the road.
- Watch for koalas and kangaroos near dawn and dusk.
