Skyline Drive
Skyline Drive runs the full length of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, following the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains from Front Royal to Rockfish Gap, where it joins the Blue Ridge Parkway.
It is a gentle, beautiful ride with a low speed limit and dozens of overlooks over the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the Piedmont to the east — perfect for a relaxed day or as the opening act of a longer Blue Ridge trip.
Highlights
- The views over the Shenandoah Valley from the northern overlooks
- Marys Rock Tunnel
- Skyland and Big Meadows, the highest developed areas of the park
- The hike to Hawksbill, the park's highest summit
- Continuing onto the Blue Ridge Parkway at Rockfish Gap
Best time to ride
April to November. October fall color is spectacular and busy. Sections close temporarily in winter for snow and ice.
The road
Smooth and well-maintained with a 35 mph speed limit. Deer, bears and other wildlife often cross the road, especially at dawn and dusk.
Riding tips
- There is a national park entrance fee.
- Fuel is available at Big Meadows in season — otherwise fill up in towns before entering.
- Respect the speed limit: it is strictly enforced, and wildlife collisions are common.
