Ruta 40

Ruta 40 runs the length of Argentina along the eastern side of the Andes, from Cabo Vírgenes near the Strait of Magellan to La Quiaca on the Bolivian border — one of the longest roads in the world.

This MOTOVIP staff pick covers the stretch between Bariloche and Mendoza: lake district forests, volcanic steppe, condors overhead and wine country at the end. It is a ride of big skies, long straights and very little traffic.

Best time to ride

November to March (the southern summer). Spring and autumn are cooler but quieter; winter brings snow and closures in the high sections.

The road

Much of this stretch is now paved, but some gravel and broken sections remain. Strong crosswinds are common in Patagonia.

Riding tips

• Distances between fuel stations can exceed 100 miles — fill up every time you can.
• Wind is the biggest danger: ride with a relaxed upper body and give trucks room.
• Carry cash for small towns and fuel stations.
