Manali–Leh Highway
The Manali–Leh Highway crosses the Himalaya from the green valleys of Himachal Pradesh to the high desert of Ladakh. Over several days it climbs over a string of high passes, past nomad camps and through a landscape that feels like another planet.
It is one of the most famous motorcycle rides in the world, and for many riders a once-in-a-lifetime trip — but the altitude, cold and road conditions demand respect.
Highlights
- The Atal Tunnel, now bypassing the old Rohtang Pass climb out of Manali
- Baralacha La and the tent camps at Sarchu
- The Gata Loops — a staircase of hairpins
- The More Plains, a high plateau of straight roads
- Tanglang La before the descent into the Indus Valley and Leh
Best time to ride
Usually open from June to late September or early October, after snow clearance. Exact dates vary every year.
The road
A mix of good asphalt, broken road, gravel and water crossings, especially near the passes. Weather can turn to snow at any time at altitude.
Riding tips
- Acclimatize: altitude sickness is real. Spend a night at intermediate altitude and ascend gradually.
- Carry fuel — stations are very far apart on the high section.
- Check permit and registration rules for your vehicle and route before leaving Manali.
