Carretera Austral

The Carretera Austral (Ruta 7) runs south from Puerto Montt through Chilean Patagonia toward Villa O'Higgins. It links isolated towns through temperate rainforest, fjords, hanging glaciers and turquoise rivers — one of the last great wilderness roads on Earth.

This is an adventure ride, not a road trip: long sections are gravel, ferries are part of the route in the north, and distances between fuel stops require planning. In return you get some of the most spectacular scenery in South America almost to yourself.

• Queulat National Park and its hanging glacier
• Coyhaique, the main town for supplies and repairs
• General Carrera Lake and the Marble Caves at Puerto Río Tranquilo
• The remote southern end toward Cochrane and Villa O'Higgins

Best time to ride

December to March (the southern summer). Even then expect rain, wind and cold; outside this window ferries run less often and weather is harsh.

The road

A mix of paved stretches and gravel, with potholes, washboard and loose sections after rain. A bike with decent suspension and tires suited to gravel makes a big difference.

Riding tips

• Book or check ferry schedules in advance in high season.
• Carry extra fuel capacity — some gaps between stations are long.
• Bring waterproof gear and a spare tube or plug kit; help can be hours away.
